You might have seen me getting nostalgic on my social media pages recently as my first-born completed his GCSEs in June.
Moving onto the next phase always brings mixed feelings of excitement for the journey ahead and reflection on what’s now in the past.
It’s no different for growing businesses, which is why I’m writing about how you can tap into the back-to-school feeling before you’ve even finished your summer holidays (marketing always needs to be planned ahead!).
Like a shiny new pencil case and a well-organised rucksack that’s waiting by the door for that first day of a new school year, businesses should be preparing for some strong September campaigns to capitalise on the shared sense of ‘getting back to it’.
As awesome as the summer season can be, many of us look forward to returning to a routine and come back with a renewed sense of wanting to achieve something specific. It’s often the time of year when we start to reassess and reappraise – like a second ‘new year, new me’ determination.
So, how can you harness this with your marketing?
Promote new habits
September is a prime time for new beginnings and habit formation. Whether you’re selling something that enhances a daily routine, promoting a subscription service, trying to get customers to upgrade what they currently buy from you, or getting potential customers to switch to you from a different supplier, shout about the benefits in September.
Launch something new
If you’re working on a new product or service, September is a great time to launch – not only does it get heard better without the competing noise of new year roll-outs, but we’re often more easily encouraged to explore and try something new when we have the ‘back-to-school’ mindset.
Get serious
When we set goals in September, they’ve often got a short-term deadline – by Christmas, I want to achieve X.
Make sure you understand what your ideal customers and existing customers want to achieve over the next few months and communicate how you can help them succeed over the next 30, 60, 90 days.
So, before you switch on the out of office for your summer break, have you got your new equipment ready for the first day back?
